Why do farmers adopt this old technique even today and how effective is it? It is also interesting how this is done.
First of all, understand that facilities like modern storage are very expensive for the farmers. Secondly, there is no guarantee that the grains remain safe for a long time, that is, for years. In such a situation, the farmers are left with the option of traditional methods. These farmers make pits and then make mounds so that the grains are not damaged by the rain and are protected from insects.
How is the grain preserved?
At least 6 feet deep pit is dug to bury the grains safely.
Care is taken that this pit should be at the highest place in the village so that there is no danger from the underground water level.
In this pit, fodder and clay ie clay coating is done.
– The grains are properly kept in it.
After closing this pit, a mound is made above it so that there is no danger of opening of the pit.
Farmers say, ‘This is a cheap and reliable solution. We have been following this method for generations. Whenever there is surplus grain or leftovers, we store it like this. Since there is dry grain in these pits, they are considered sacred. Women cover them with cow dung and decorate them with rangolis. These villagers say, ‘Food grains stored in this way are easy to cook, not only healthy, but never raw.’
